Well Behaved (don’t get your reading glasses, I really wrote that)

We went to Costco as a family. I do not enjoy shopping in a large warehouse setting packed to the gills with merchandise and shoppers. The noise, colors and smells in this vast space bombard me at every angle and make my skin crawl. You add in the antics of the boys and I’m all but hunkered down in the wine department pleading for a Costco worker to give me a sample. Now there’s an idea, if Costco gave out wine samples like they did their foodstuffs, it would quickly go to the top of my best-store-ever list.

Of course Mad Dog loves it even without the promise of free alcohol. He could spend hours bumping into people, perusing the gigantic lasagnas and nibbling on samples of cheese if he so desires.

To compromise, our trips to this mecca of bulk-shopping are rare and since I know how much Mad Dog loves it and I love him, I go.

As we entered the store I took a deep pull of breath and braced myself for the worst.

I was pleasantly surprised. This surprise is in reference to the boys.  They behaved with the utmost respect and decorum. They behaved how I always knew they could. The rest of the experience was much as I imagined; crowded, loud and larger-than-life.

This refreshing and unexpected of calmness of T.Puzzle and Full Speed was enough to help me endure the ocean of Costco madness.

Way to go, guys!  Now, let’s take this rare occurrence and supersize it Costco style!

The Sword Fighting Champion

Little T.Puzzle and I settled back into the couch’s cushions and prepared for the smack-down sword fight to begin. Full Speed was already talking a big game. Before he had convinced Mad Dog to do battle, he had tried unsuccessfully to sweet talk me into a sword match.

“Mom, remember how you used to be sword-fighting champion of the world?” he argued.

Not really. I’m guessing at some point either myself or Mad Dog made this outrageous claim to entertain ourselves. Leave it to Full Speed to file this fictitious tidbit in his infallible memory and believe it as truth.

As ‘sword-fighting champion of the world’ I politely declined.  Full Speed was more than happy to turn his aggression on Mad Dog.

About the third match in, Full Speed crouched low to the ground. You could sense he was pooling his energy in his legs and was about to burst forward and administer a mighty blow.

Little T.Puzzle and I waited for the dramatic outcome. Full Speed yelled, flailed his arms and shot up like a rocket. Instead of his sword making contact with Mad Dog, it flew out of his hand and landed harmlessly a few feet away.

I burst into laughter. Soon, we are all cracking-up and I realized that being a sword-fighting champion pales in comparison to a great, cacophonous laughing fit.

Thanks for the chuckle, Full Speed!

No Apparent Reason

Sometimes when you least expect it, the heavens of good fortune rain down upon you and your in-laws offer to take your kids for the whole night.

Little T.Puzzle just got picked up by Grandma and his cousins. They are on their way to get Full Speed from his summer camp.

I am breathing in the silence.

Amazing.

My goal is to grow this opportunity for the future. First it starts with one night, then I’m going to hope for one weekend and then if I’m really, truly frazzled (which you know I am) I’m going to shoot for one whole month. Heck, why not go for a whole year?

You know I couldn’t do that. Then I’d have to change my blog’s name to ‘writes for no apparent reason’.

My life is a rollercoaster and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Except maybe a weekend getaway without kids.

Goodish Things Will Happen

As I was getting little T.Puzzle dressed for the day, he is always curious to know what kind of character underpants he is going to wear. He is delighted when the characters are Thomas the Train related.

“Don’t peep or poop on Thomas!” he exclaims. I love that he says peep. It never fails to entertain me. I will be sad when he finally figures that one out.

Our day was action-packed as usual. We started at the sprinklers, headed out for pizza and then topped it off with Target. Mad Dog even had additional plans for our evening but I quickly nixed them. I told him I needed a break.

Desperately.

He then offered to take the boys to the grocery. This left me with some peace and quiet.

Finally.

When my trio of men returned, Full Speed was the first one through the door.

“What kind of report am I going to get from your Dad?” I asked referencing his and little T.Puzzle’s behavior at the store.

“Goodish and badish, Mom.”

It was goodish that he told the truth I guess.

Vacation from My Vacation

I know you all can relate. Vacations are great but sometimes it would be nice to have a few ‘recovery’ days before heading back into your normal routine. Especially if your normal routine involves the likes of T.Puzzle and Full Speed.

My sister and her family are leaving tomorrow. We have been very lucky to get to spend so much time with them. It has felt nice to reconnect with my nieces and nephews. They are a great group of kids.

Here are some of the lessons I learned on this vacation:

1. No matter how much time or distance separates you from the people you care about, the love you have for them remains constant.
2. SPF 100 does not prevent sunburn on a Florida beach in the heart of July. Ouch and ouch!
3. When you are three and five (like my boys) having your cousins around to play with is tantamount to having cookies for breakfast or watching fireworks every night (which we did our three nights at Disney last week).
4. Some of my best vacation memories will be the simple ones. Quiet conversations with my ever evolving nieces, watching my oldest nephew bond with T.Puzzle and Full Speed, marveling that my littlest nephew finally lets me hold him without tears and soaking in the chaos that is my family and loving it.

Thanks for the memories…
