This has happened to me countless times.  I’m on an errand of some sort with the boys that inevitably places us in a too small, overcrowded waiting area.  This week it was for my allergy shots.  Part of the problem is I stubbornly refuse to use electronic devices to keep them entertained and quiet.  They each are allowed to pick two hotwheels cars and must use their imaginations to pass the time.

It quickly becomes an experiment on a sociological level.  I am able to divide the people in the waiting room into three categories:

1.  People who think my lively boys are adorable and highly entertaining.  Which naturally they are.

2.  People who have never raised boys, who rarely are around boys and who clearly wish that the world was child-free. These are my favorite category of people.  They are so bright and cheery.

3.  People who don’t care.  No, wait, these actually are my favorite category.

Small spaces, big spaces, crowded or deserted, none of this changes that my boys are who they are.

Thankfully I happen to fall into the first category so it works out.

Welcome to Our Special Show

Apparently since T.Puzzle and Full Speed are thoroughly enjoying their summer vacation, they would like Mad Dog to join in their fun.  On a ride home from errands Full Speed asked me if I knew Mad Dog’s work number.

“Why?” I asked.

“Maybe we can call his bosses later and see if they will let your husband have a week off.  Then we can make him feel very special all week long,” he replied.

I liked his idea.  I also enjoyed how he referred to Mad Dog as my husband and not as Dad.  I think he was trying to be more formal sounding so Mad Dog’s bosses would take his request seriously.

I didn’t want to dampen the sincerity of his spirit so I quickly devised a plan.

“Why don’t we make a video for Dad’s bosses and we can send it to Dad to share with his bosses later?”

T.Puzzle and Full Speed were quite happy with this notion.  They enjoy the art of video as much as a wrestling smack-down.

Here is the result:

Moneybags

The boys and I were discussing family trips past, present and future.  Full Speed shared that he would like to go to Hawaii someday.  I explained that this is a very big trip and a lot of planning and saving would have to go into to it.

“Mom, I know what we can do!  You can use all the money I have in my piggy bank!  It’s a lot so we should have plenty.  I don’t mind letting you use it.  I know how you and Dad use all your money for the games at Chicago Pizza.”

Looks like I better pack some bags.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

I love to watch design shows.   So when Full Speed pipes up that we need new furniture my mind flashes to some interesting possibilities.  When my beach-cottage daydream is over I closely evaluate his intention.  Is he wondering out loud when Extreme Home Makeover is coming to give him a Jurassic-themed bedroom?  Or is he feeling bored and on the lookout for the ‘next best thing’?

Surprisingly, a third option revealed itself.

“Mom, I’m thinking we need to put a big welcome rug right here,” he shares as he points to the empty floor space in front of our lanai doors.  “Then, maybe here in the middle of the room we could get a trampoline so when T.Puzzle chair dives he won’t have to worry about getting hurt.”

Brilliant!

Then, it gets even more interesting as T.Puzzle shares his design insight.  “Maybe we could put four beds in front of the TV so we can all lay down like we are sleeping when we watch a movie.  Dad could have football sheets, I could have Star Wars sheets, because I LOVE Star Wars, and Mom could have Barbie sheets.  What kind of sheets do you want, Full Speed?  Transformers?”

Look out HGTV I have two designers headed your way.

Generosity of Spirit

When we receive important news, we often are able to describe in detail where we were and what we were doing when first learn of it.

It was 10:14 a.m.  I was seated at the computer checking emails.  I had on shorts and a printed purple tank top that I had worn to my morning workout.   It was sunny and the heat of the day was beginning its usual build-up.  I wore no make-up, my hair was scrunched back in a haphazard ponytail and my brow was furrowed with concentration as I scrolled through my inbox.  I heard my phone beep to alert me of an incoming text.

Grandma wanted to know if she could take both boys overnight.

Do mothers like cocktails?  Is summer hot in Florida?

I was feeling so generous of spirit after this offer I was willing to give her the whole weekend with them.

Who knows, I may even let her have them for all of July.

I’m that generous.
